Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "hasan", but this (particular) chain is "da'if" because of the weakness of 'Abd Allah bin 'Ammar al-Aslami; moreover, a disagreement has also been found in its chain;
Technical note: Yahya bin Jabir al-Ta'i (a thiqah Syrian narrator) contradicted him;
Details of the narration: Yahya narrated it from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Jubayr bin Nufayr, from his father, from 'Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him);
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned this disagreement in the chain in his book "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (8/266) and then preferred the narration of Yahya bin Jabir al-Ta'i.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (36/22128) narrated it through 'Uthman bin 'Umar with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad also recorded it (22021) through Muhammad bin Bishr, from 'Abd Allah bin 'Amir, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari recorded it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (8/266) in mu'allaq form (without a chain), and Imam al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (18/94) and in "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (1872) through Ishaq bin Ibrahim bin al-'Ala' (Ibn Zibriq), from 'Amr bin al-Harith al-Himsi, from 'Abd Allah bin Salim al-Ash'ari, from Muhammad bin al-Walid al-Zubaydi, from Yahya bin Jabir al-Ta'i, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Jubayr bin Nufayr, from his father, from 'Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him);
Grading: God willing, this chain is "hasan" because of Ibn Zibriq and his shaykh (who were discussed at no. 907);
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: There is another route of this hadith from Yahya bin Jabir which strengthens it.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (18/127) through Dawud bin 'Amr al-Dabbi, and at (128) through Muhammad bin 'Isa al-Tabba' and Abu al-Rabi' al-Zahrani; Abu Tahir al-Dhahabi in "al-Mukhallisiyyat" (850) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (22/325 and 64/101) through Dawud bin Rushayd; and Abu Nu'aym in "Tarikh Asbahan" (2/214) through Muhammad bin Bukayr;
Details of the narration: All these narrators narrate it from Isma'il bin 'Ayyash, he from Sulayman bin Sulaym al-Kinani, he from Yahya bin Jabir al-Ta'i, and he from 'Awf bin Malik;
Important point: Isma'il bin 'Ayyash's narration from the people of his own land (the Syrians) is sound, and this is one of them;
Technical note: Yahya bin Jabir's narration from 'Awf bin Malik here is "mursal", but its intermediary is known from the narration of Muhammad bin al-Walid al-Zubaydi (namely 'Abd al-Rahman bin Jubayr from his father);
General principle: Yahya bin Jabir frequently narrated with "irsal" from the Syrian Companions, and the intermediary between them is 'Abd al-Rahman bin Jubayr bin Nufayr, who narrates from his father.
Note / Clarification: "Al-taba'" (with fathah on the ta' and the ba') means dirt and blemish; anything in religion or worldly life that is disgraceful is called "taba'". The meaning of the hadith is: O Allah, I seek refuge with You from a greed that leads me to what disgraces me and becomes the cause of shameful deeds that lower my worth and standing, such as abasing myself before base people, humbling myself before worldly people, and seeking fame and showing off.
Note / Clarification: His (peace and blessings be upon him) words "tama' fi ghayr matma'" mean: greed for something whose attainment, and attachment to which, is remote (close to impossible).
Note / Clarification: His (peace and blessings be upon him) words "tama' hina la matma'" mean: greed for something in which there is no room for greed at all, because it is impossible physically or by the Shari'ah. This is the lowest and worst degree of meanness and baseness.
