Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1943

It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say these words as a supplication: 'Allahumma antal-awwalu la shay'a qablak, wa antal-akhiru fala shay'a ba'dak, a'udhu bika min sharri dabbatin nasiyatuha biyadik, wa a'udhu bika minal-ithmi wal-kasal, wa min 'adhabil-qabr, wa min fitnatil-ghina, wa min fitnatil-faqr, wa a'udhu bika minal-ma'thami wal-maghram. Allahumma naqqi qalbi minal-khataya kama naqqaytath-thawbal-abyada minad-danas. Allahumma ba''id bayni wa bayna khati'ati kama ba''adta baynal-mashriqi wal-maghrib' (O Allah, You are the First, there is nothing before You, and You are the Last, there is nothing after You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of every creature whose forelock is in Your grip. I seek refuge in You from sin, laziness, the punishment of the grave, the trial of wealth and the trial of poverty, and I seek refuge in You from sinful deeds and from being burdened by debt. O Allah, cleanse my heart of errors as You cleanse a white garment of dirt. O Allah, put a distance between me and my errors like the distance You have placed between the East and the West).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The name "Suhayl bin Abi Salih" had dropped out of the manuscripts, and we have restored it in light of the previous narration and other sources.

Grading: It is sahih on account of supporting reports. There is disagreement about the narration of Junadah bin Salm, but Ibn Khuzaymah and Ibn Hibban declared him reliable and al-Bukhari called him "muqarib al-hadith".
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir", and al-Tabarani and Ibn 'Asakir narrated it with a connected chain.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari also narrated it with the chain of Fudayl bin Sulayman from Musa bin 'Uqbah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In one narration of Yusuf bin Khalid al-Samti the chain is altered, but that narrator is "matruk" (abandoned).
