Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1934

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed leading us in the Fajr prayer so much that the sun was about to rise. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came out, led us in prayer and kept it brief. After concluding with the salam, he turned towards us and said: "Stay in your places. I will tell you why I was delayed in the prayer today. I prayed during this night as much as I wished, then my eyes grew heavy and I fell asleep. I saw my Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, and Allah inspired in my heart these words to say: 'Allahumma inni as'alukat-tayyibat, wa tarkal-munkarat, wa hubbal-masakin, wa an tatuba 'alayya, wa taghfira li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan, fa najjini ilayka minha ghayra maftun, Allahumma wa as'aluka hubbak, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik' (O Allah, I ask You for pure good deeds, for abandoning evils and for love of the poor, and that You accept my repentance, forgive me and have mercy on me; and when You intend to bring about a trial among Your creation, call me to Yourself without my being put to trial. O Allah, I ask You for Your love, the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds that bring me closer to Your love)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards us and said: "Learn them and teach them, for they are absolutely true."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is very weak. Sa'id bin Suwayd is majhul, Abu Shaybah al-Wasiti is weak and munkar al-hadith, and Ibn Abi Layla had a poor memory. Moreover, 'Abd al-Rahman did not hear from Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Al-Daraqutni narrated it via the route of Muhammad bin Suwayd and stated explicitly that all its chains are mudtarib (inconsistent) and not sahih.
