Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1928

It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) left his house, he would make this supplication: 'Bismillah, rabbi a'udhu bika an azilla aw adilla, aw azlima aw uzlama, aw ajhala aw yujhala 'alayya' (In the name of Allah (I go out). O my Lord, I seek refuge in You from slipping or going astray, from wronging (anyone) or being wronged, and from behaving foolishly or being treated foolishly).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. If anyone imagines that Imam al-Sha'bi did not hear from Sayyidah Umm Salamah, that is not correct, for he visited both Sayyidah Aishah and Sayyidah Umm Salamah and narrated abundantly from both of them.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Sufyan al-Thawri, Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir and 'Amir bin Sharahil al-Sha'bi are all thiqah. Al-Sha'bi's hearing from (meeting with) Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) is certain, as we have made clear in our edition of Sunan Ibn Majah.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad and al-Nasa'i narrated it with this same chain via the route of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi.
Grading: Imam Ahmad, al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa'i narrated it via the route of Waki', at the beginning of which are the words "In the name of Allah, I put my trust in Allah". Imam al-Tirmidhi declared it "hasan sahih".
Variation in the chain: Imam al-Nasa'i declared the narration of Mu'ammal bin Isma'il a "mistake", because he mentioned 'Asim in the chain, whereas the correct one is Shu'bah from Mansur. Mu'ammal bin Isma'il is a narrator who made many mistakes.
Important point: According to Hafiz Ibn Hajar, the difference between Mansur and Zubayd over narrating this as connected or mursal is not harmful, because Mansur is thiqah and a hafiz, and his narration is preserved.
