It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty has chosen four phrases from speech: 'Subhan Allah, wal-hamdu lillah, wa la ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar' (Glorified is Allah, all praise is for Allah, there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest). When a servant says 'Subhan Allah', twenty good deeds are written for him or twenty sins are wiped away; when he says 'Allahu akbar', the same happens; when he says 'La ilaha illallah', the reward is the same; and when a servant says of his own accord (with sincerity of heart): 'All praise is for Allah, the Lord of all the worlds', thirty good deeds are written for him and thirty of his sins are forgiven."
This hadith is sahih on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.
Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah, but there was disagreement over Abu Sinan as to whether it is marfu' or mawquf, and the preponderant view appears to be that it is "mawquf". Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ahmad and al-Nasa'i with the chain Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi and Abd al-Razzaq from Isra'il. Variation in the chain: Khalid bin Abd Allah al-Wasiti contradicted Isra'il and narrated it from Abu Sinan as mawquf (Ziyadat al-Zuhd: 1000). Important point: The mawquf view is further supported by the fact that Suhayl bin Abi Salih reported it as the statement of "Ka'b al-Ahbar" (al-Nasa'i: 10611). Reference / Source: Muhammad bin Nasr al-Marwazi also narrated it via Suhayl from Ka'b al-Ahbar in "abridged" form. (1911). Defect ('illah) / Technical note: Most likely Abu Hurayrah heard this whole account from Ka'b al-Ahbar, since he used to sit in his company, and calling it marfu' appears to be an error. Guidance: See also no. (1911). Grading: However, al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban narrated it with the chain al-A'mash from Abu Salih with the wording "The best speech is four (phrases)", and its chain is sahih. With Imam Ahmad it is narrated from "some Companions"; evidently Abu Hurayrah is among them. Important point: Thus only this much of the hadith (the virtue of the four phrases) is sahih as marfu', and it is supported by another narration of Abu Hurayrah in Sahih Muslim (2695): "Saying Subhan Allah (and the rest) is more beloved to me than everything in the world." (2137). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for this portion is also the hadith of Samurah bin Jundub in Sahih Muslim (2137).
