It is narrated from Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a Companion who fought at Badr, that they were on a journey when the people stopped at a place to have their morning meal. Shaddad (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Bring this dining cloth near so that we may occupy ourselves with it (eating). Then immediately (feeling regret over these words of his) he said: I seek forgiveness from Allah! Since I accepted Islam I have never spoken a word without holding its reins and weighing it fully before speaking, except this word of mine. (Remember,) Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say this; rather, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Shaddad, when you see people hoarding treasures of gold and silver, then store up these words as your treasure: 'Allahumma inni as'alukat-tathabbuta fil-umur, wa 'azimatar-rushd, wa as'aluka shukra ni'matik, wa husna 'ibadatik, wa as'aluka qalban salima, wa lisanan sadiqa, wa khuluqan mustaqima, wa astaghfiruka lima ta'lam, wa as'aluka min khayri ma ta'lam, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma ta'lam, innaka anta 'allamul-ghuyub' (O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in all matters and firmness upon right guidance; I ask You for the ability to be grateful for Your blessing and to worship You in the best way; I ask You for a sound heart, a truthful tongue and upright character; I seek Your forgiveness for all the sins that are within Your knowledge; I ask You for all the good that is within Your knowledge; and I seek refuge in You from all the evil that is within Your knowledge. Indeed, You alone are the Knower of all that is hidden)."
This hadith is sahih on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: On the basis of corroborations and supporting reports, this chain is "hasan". Although Muhammad bin Sinan al-Qazzaz is weak, his hadith becomes hasan in supporting reports. Shaddad Abu Ammar: he is Shaddad bin Abd Allah al-Qurashi. Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Bayhaqi in "al-Da'awat" (243) without the opening story, with this same chain. Variation in the chain: Imam Ahmad (17114) narrated it via Hassan bin Atiyyah, which is "munqati'", because Hassan did not hear from Shaddad. Ibn Hibban (935) mentions the intermediary "Muslim bin Mishkam" between them, but he is weak. Defect ('illah) / Technical note: Sa'id bin Iyas al-Jurayri narrated it, but he suffered from ikhtilat (deterioration of memory) and was inconsistent in it. Sometimes he gave the unnamed link "a man from Banu Hanzalah" and sometimes not. Therefore this chain is weak. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: We have mentioned the other routes of this hadith in our commentary on "al-Musnad"; taken together they make this hadith strong.
