Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1859

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them (the Companions): "O people, would you like to exert yourselves fully in supplication?" They said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: 'Allahumma a'inna 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik' (O Allah, help us to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You in the best manner)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic), because the narrator named Kharijah has only been criticised for narrating from unknown (majhul) narrators; but when he narrates from reliable and firm narrators, his narration is accepted.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih, but this chain is "extremely weak" because Kharijah bin Mus'ab al-Khurasani is "matruk"; however, he has been corroborated, although the chain also contains idtirab (inconsistency), as will follow.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Da'awat" (275) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this chain.
Variation in the chain: Ibrahim bin Ishaq al-Sarraj narrated it from Yahya bin Yahya, differing from Isma'il bin Qutaybah: Ibn al-A'rabi narrated it in his "Mu'jam" (1180) from him, from Yahya bin Yahya, from Kharijah, from Abd Allah bin Ata', from Musa bin Uqbah, but saying in it, with doubt: "from Ata' bin Yasar or from Abu Salih al-Samman, from Abu Hurayrah".
Reference / Source: Musa bin Tariq Abu Qurrah al-Zubaydi narrated it (in Musnad Ahmad 13/7982, and by way of Ahmad Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" 9/223) from Musa bin Uqbah, from Abu Salih al-Samman and Ata' bin Yasar, or from one of them, from Abu Hurayrah, without mentioning Muhammad bin al-Munkadir; its narrators are thiqah.
Grading: Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i narrated it in "al-Ghaylaniyyat" (620) by way of Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Mujabbar, from Muhammad bin al-Munkadir, from Ata' and Abu Salih al-Samman, from Abu Hurayrah; this Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman is "matruk".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd al-Aziz bin Abd Allah al-Majishun also narrated it from Muhammad bin al-Munkadir (as al-Daraqutni mentioned in "al-Ilal" (1977)), and there is disagreement over it from him too: Musa bin Isma'il al-Tabudhaki narrated it from him from Ibn al-Munkadir from Ata' bin Yasar from Abu Salih from Abu Hurayrah. Al-Daraqutni said the correct version from al-Majishun is: from Ibn al-Munkadir, from Ata' or Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Hisham bin Urwah narrated it from Ibn al-Munkadir as "mursal", with disagreement from him as well: Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Shukr" (4) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Da'awat" (274) and "al-Shu'ab" (4098) narrated it via Ja'far bin Awn (Ibn Abi al-Dunya pairing Abu Mu'awiyah with him), from Hisham, from Ibn al-Munkadir, who said: Among the supplications of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was: "O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You well."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Hammad bin Salamah corroborated them, in the narration of Ibn Abi Shaybah (10/427) by his route from Hisham bin Urwah from Muhammad bin al-Munkadir as "mursal".
Technical note: Ibn Abi Shaybah differed from the two narrators from Ja'far bin Awn: in his "Musannaf" (10/427) he narrated it from Ja'far bin Awn, from Hisham bin Urwah, from his father, making it a "mursal" narration of Urwah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ma'mar corroborated Ja'far bin Awn in this, narrating it in his "Jami'" (19632) from Hisham bin Urwah from his father as "mursal".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bazzar (2075), whose narrators are thiqah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The hadith of A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) in Abu Sa'id al-Naqqash's "Thalathat Majalis min Amalih" (52) also supports it, and its chain is "hasan".
Grading: The narration of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), in al-Khatib's "Tarikh Baghdad" (6/372) and Abu Ali al-Saffar's "Fawa'id" (5), has a chain that is "wahin" (extremely weak).
Important point / Summary: This same supplication is narrated in the hadith of Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) (number 1023), restricted to after the prayer, and its chain is "sahih".

Criticism of a narrator: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar objected to the author in "Ithaf al-Maharah" (15/410), saying: "No, by Allah." Indeed he (Kharijah) is severely weak; were it not for Yahya bin Yahya calling him "mustaqim al-hadith", there would be agreement on his weakness, and some even called him a liar. Ibn Hajar summarised his status in "al-Taqrib": matruk; he used to conceal (tadlis) liars, and it is said that Ibn Ma'in called him a liar.
