It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: O My servant, I am as you think of Me, and I am with you when you remember Me." (Imam al-Hakim says:) The mention of thinking is recorded in the "Sahih" (Bukhari and Muslim), while the mention of supplication, though gharib (singular), is sahih, because Muhammad bin al-Qasim is a reliable (thiqah) narrator.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "wahin" (very weak): Muhammad bin al-Qasim al-Asadi is accused of lying, but the text of the hadith is sahih. Technical note: We found no one other than the author (al-Hakim) who narrated it with this chain, but it is narrated by another, sahih route from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) in Musnad Ahmad (20/13192, 21/13939), from Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, from Shu'bah, from Qatadah, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah says: I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he calls upon Me." (7795). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic the hadith of Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) will come later under number (7795). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Musnad Ahmad (12/7422), and there we have mentioned the other hadiths on this topic.
(2686) (19). Reference / Source: This hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) was narrated by Imam al-Bukhari (7405, 5705) and Imam Muslim (2675 (2), 2686 (19)).
Important point / Summary: If al-Hakim means the phrase "I am with you when you remember Me" (in some narrations "I am with him when he calls upon Me"), this too is narrated in al-Bukhari and Muslim; indeed, one of Muslim's narrations has exactly the words "I am with him when he calls upon Me".
Criticism of a narrator: Rather, there is consensus on the weakness of Muhammad bin al-Qasim al-Asadi, except for what is reported from Yahya bin Ma'in declaring him reliable; Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud and al-Daraqutni accused him of lying.
Technical note: A word in our manuscripts could not be identified, but in the biography of Muhammad bin al-Qasim al-Asadi his title is given as "Kaw", so perhaps there is a corruption of this kind here. Allah knows best.
