Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1848

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) got up from a gathering, he would certainly say these words: 'Subhanaka Allahumma rabbi wa bihamdika, la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk' (Glory be to You, O Allah, my Lord, and with Your praise; there is no true god but You; I seek Your forgiveness and I turn to You in repentance). I said to him: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), how often you say these words when you get up! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever says them when he gets up from his gathering, whatever (fault or slip) occurred from him in that gathering (during the conversation) is forgiven."
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (its chain is authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: The hadith is sahih and its narrators are thiqah, except that al-Mizzi mentioned in the biography of Zurarah bin Awfa in "Tahdhib al-Kamal" that what is preserved is that Sa'd bin Hisham stands between him and A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her). Abu Hatim also pointed to a defect in it because of the disagreement over it from al-Layth bin Sa'd, as will follow.
Technical note: Al-Layth is Ibn Sa'd, Ibn al-Had is Yazid bin Abd Allah, and Yahya bin Sa'id is al-Ansari.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (10158) narrated it by way of Shu'ayb bin al-Layth bin Sa'd, from his father, with this chain.
Variation in the chain: Qutaybah bin Sa'id differed from Shu'ayb and Ibn Bukayr: al-Nasa'i (10159) narrated it from him, from al-Layth, from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, from Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Sa'd bin Zurarah, from an unnamed man of Sham, from A'ishah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar ("Tahdhib al-Tahdhib" 1/629) considered the mention of Zurarah bin Awfa from A'ishah an error, the correct version being "Ibn Zurarah from A'ishah", with something dropped from it. See also "Ilal Ibn Abi Hatim" (6/333-335).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (41/24486) and al-Nasa'i (1268, 10067, 10160) narrated by way of Urwah from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat in a gathering or prayed, he said certain words; when she asked about them, he said: "If he has spoken good, it will be a seal upon it until the Day of Resurrection, and if he has spoken otherwise, it will be an expiation: Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise; there is no god but You; I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You." Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (40/24065, 42/25508), Muslim (484) and Ibn Hibban (6411, 6412) narrated by way of Masruq from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that before his death the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) often said: "Glory be to You and praise; I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You." When she asked him about these new words, he said: "A sign has been set for me in my Ummah; when I see it, I say them: 'When the help of Allah and the victory come'" to the end of the surah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Zurarah from A'ishah has supporting reports from the hadiths of Abu Hurayrah, Jubayr bin Mut'im, Abu Barzah and Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with them), which will come in sequence under numbers (1990-1993); see the full list of supporting reports at the hadith of Abu Hurayrah.
