It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Any people who sit in a gathering and stay there for a long time, then disperse from it without remembering Allah and without sending blessings upon their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), there will be upon them from Allah a tirah (loss, regret and the burden of shortcoming); then if Allah wills He will punish them, and if He wills He will forgive them."
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (its chain is authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it, and its narrator Salih (the freed slave of al-Taw'amah) is not to be discarded.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: In the manuscripts this was corrupted to "gharib", and in manuscript (z) it is marked as doubtful.
Technical note: Manuscripts (s) and (a) have the words: "and they send blessings upon the Prophet".
Grading: The hadith is sahih, and the chain is "hasan" because of Salih, the freed slave of al-Taw'amah (Ibn Nabhan), who is saduq and hasan in hadith. Although he later became confused (ikhtilat), Umarah bin Ghaziyyah heard from him before that, and he is also corroborated by Ibn Abi Dhi'b and Ziyad bin Sa'd, who likewise heard from him before his confusion. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (15/9764, 16/10277, 10278) and al-Tirmidhi (3380) narrated it by way of Sufyan al-Thawri, Ahmad (15/9843) by way of Ibn Abi Dhi'b, and Ahmad (16/10422) by way of Ziyad bin Sa'd, all three from Salih, the freed slave of al-Taw'amah, with this chain; al-Thawri, however, heard from Salih after his confusion. Al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan" and explained that "tirah" means regret and remorse. (1829). Guidance: See also the earlier hadith number (1829).
Scholarly response: Imam al-Dhahabi objected in "al-Talkhis" that Salih is weak, but he was declared weak only because of his confusion; since Umarah bin Ghaziyyah narrated from him early on, the cause of weakness no longer applies.
