Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1846

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you of a deed that is the best of your deeds, the purest in the sight of your Master, the highest in raising your ranks, better for you than giving away gold and silver (in the path of Allah), and better than meeting your enemy (on the battlefield) so that you strike their necks and they strike your necks?" The Companions said: And what is that, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The remembrance of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic." And Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: There is no deed that saves a person from the punishment of Allah more than the remembrance of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (its chain is authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: In the manuscripts it was corrupted to "Abi"; the correct reading is as in the printed edition and his biographical sources, and Ibn Ayyash is Abd Allah bin Ayyash bin Abi Rabi'ah.

Technical note: The manuscripts have "wa-Abi" instead of "an Abi", which is an error corrected from the source works; al-Bayhaqi also narrated it correctly by way of the author himself in "al-Da'awat al-Kabir" (20) and "Shu'ab al-Iman" (516).

Grading: Its chain is sahih, although there is disagreement over whether it is marfu' or mawquf, and whether it is muttasil or mursal, as explained in the commentary on "Musnad Ahmad" (36/21702).
Technical note: Abu Bahriyyah is Abd Allah bin Qays al-Kindi.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (21702) narrated it from Makki bin Ibrahim, with this chain, but without the report of Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) at its end.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (21702) also narrated it from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan, from Abd Allah bin Sa'id bin Abi Hind.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (3790), by way of al-Mughirah bin Abd al-Rahman, and al-Tirmidhi (3377), by way of al-Fadl bin Musa, both from Abd Allah bin Sa'id, narrated it in full together with the saying of Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam Ahmad (36/21704, 45/27525) narrated it without the report of Mu'adh by way of Musa bin Uqbah, from Ziyad bin Abi Ziyad, the freed slave of Ibn Ayyash, from Abu al-Darda', from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); this chain is "munqati'" (broken) because Abu Bahriyyah is not mentioned in it.
Grading: Abd al-Aziz bin Abi Salamah narrated both parts from Ziyad bin Abi Ziyad but made all of it marfu' as the hadith of Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) (Ahmad 36/22079: Ziyad said it reached him from Mu'adh); this chain is weak because it is broken.
