Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1829

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Any people who sit in a gathering and get up from it without remembering Allah, it is as though they have dispersed from the carcass of a dead donkey, and that gathering will be a source of regret for them on the Day of Resurrection."

Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (15/9052, 16/10680, 10825), Abu Dawud (4855) and Ibn Hibban (590) narrated it by various routes from Suhayl bin Abi Salih, with this chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It has other routes from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), which will come later under numbers (1832), (1847) and (2040).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is the hadith of Jabir bin Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Nasa'i (9803, 10172).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Nasa'i (10170).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For the narration of Abu Umamah from Abd Allah bin Mughaffal, see our commentary on "al-Musnad" (9052).
Note / Clarification: According to al-Sindi (in his gloss on al-Musnad), "rising from something like the carcass of a donkey" means they rose from something disliked and filthy, because a gathering is usually not free of excessive or deficient speech, and the remembrance of Allah serves as an expiation for what took place in it.
Note / Clarification: "Regret" refers to the good that escaped them, and Allah knows best.
