It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and took him to show him the rites of Hajj. Thabir (the mountain) split open for them, and they entered Mina. Then he showed him the Jamarat, then he showed him Muzdalifah, then he showed him Arafat. Then, at the Jamrah, Satan suddenly appeared before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he threw seven pebbles at him until he sank into the ground. Then he emerged at the second Jamrah, and he threw seven pebbles at him until he sank. Then he appeared at Jamrat al-Aqabah, and he threw seven pebbles at him until he sank and went away.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is "da'if" (weak), because 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib is alone in narrating it, and he suffered from ikhtilat (deterioration of memory) at the end of his life. Defect / Technical note: 'Ata' was inconsistent in this story; here he presented it as an incident of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), while elsewhere he presented it as an incident of Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (5/153) narrated it from Imam al-Hakim and said that 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib is alone in narrating it. Reference / Source: Ibn Khuzaymah (2967) narrated it through the route of Ahmad bin Sa'id al-Darimi with this same chain. (1731). Direction: See also the hadith that passed earlier at number (1731). Note / Clarification: "Thabir" is the name of a mountain between Makkah and Mina, which the people of Makkah today call "Jabal al-Rakham". Note / Clarification: "Sakha" means to sink into the ground or go down.
