Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1761

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had stoned the Jamrah and slaughtered his sacrificial animal, he (peace and blessings be upon him) presented the right side of his head to the barber, who shaved it; then he presented the left side, and he shaved that too. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave that hair to Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) and ordered him to distribute it among the people.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: The hadith is sahih, but the mention of 'Anas bin Sirin' in this chain is a mistake; what is preserved is that it is the narration of 'Muhammad bin Sirin'.
Technical note: The first proof is that this narration is in "Musnad al-Humaydi" (1254) itself, and there the name 'Muhammad bin Sirin' is recorded explicitly.
Technical note: The second proof is that two trustworthy students of al-Humaydi (Abu Isma'il and Hatim bin Maymun) also said 'Muhammad bin Sirin' (or just Ibn Sirin).
Technical note: The third proof is that when al-Bayhaqi transmitted it through this same chain of Imam al-Hakim, there too it is written 'Ibn Sirin', by which Muhammad bin Sirin is well known to be meant.
Technical note: The fourth proof is that all the other students of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah and of Hisham bin Hassan also said 'Muhammad bin Sirin'.
Defect / Technical note: The name 'Anas bin Sirin' that appears in one narration of al-Bayhaqi is certainly a copyist's error, because al-Bayhaqi himself cited it with reference to al-Bukhari and Muslim, where the name is 'Muhammad bin Sirin'.
Important point / Summary: Al-Bayhaqi cited this same chain again in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah", and there it is correctly written 'Ibn Sirin'.
Grading: In any case, both brothers, Anas and Muhammad, are thiqah, so this mistake has no effect on the authenticity of the hadith.
