Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1729

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that on the morning of Jamrat al-Aqabah the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Come, pick up for me some pebbles of the khadhf kind (small pebbles flicked between the fingers)." When the pebbles were placed in his blessed hand, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pebbles like these (are to be used), pebbles like these. And beware of extremism (going beyond bounds) in religion, for those before you were destroyed only because of extremism in religion."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: In manuscript (B) and the printed edition it is written "Ahmad bin Ja'far bin Muhammad", which is an error.

Technical note: In the manuscripts the words "hat al-qa'ihat al-laqt li" appear here, which have no meaning, and for this reason a mark has been placed over them in manuscript (Z). Apparently in some old manuscript "hat al-laqt" was written twice, which became corrupted into "al-qa'ihat". And Allah knows best.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note: Al-Harith bin Muhammad al-Tamimi is Ibn Abi Usamah al-Hafiz, Muhammad bin Ja'far is 'Ghundar', and Abu al-'Aliyah is al-Rabi' bin Mihran al-Riyahi.
Technical note: Concerning Ibn 'Abbas, the narrator of this hadith, 'Awf bin Abi Jamilah was unsure whether he was 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas or al-Fadl bin 'Abbas, as Yahya al-Qattan mentioned in Musnad Ahmad (3248).
Reference / Source: The majority of 'Awf's students narrated it without any specification (of which name), as in Musnad Ahmad, Ibn Majah (3029), al-Nasa'i (4049) and Ibn Hibban (3871), among others.
Variation in the chain: Ja'far bin Sulayman al-Duba'i narrated it in al-Tabarani and al-Bayhaqi as part of the musnad of 'al-Fadl bin 'Abbas'. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar judged this to be correct, because at that time it was al-Fadl bin 'Abbas who was riding with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); Abu al-'Aliyah hearing from al-Fadl (may Allah be pleased with him) is possible, since he had accepted Islam in the time of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On the prohibition of extremism in religion, the hadith of Buraydah al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) has already passed at number (1190).
