Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1728

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that rushing (on the departure) began with the Bedouins: they would stand along both edges of the people, with bowls and sticks hanging from them, and when the departure began they would rattle them, which startled the people. So I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), with the back of his she-camel's neck touching the front of his saddle (as he held her back from speeding), while he was saying: "O people, hold fast to calm and dignity."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Grading محدثین: إسناده حسن
Hadith Takhrij «إسناده حسن، كثير بن شنظير فيه كلام يحطه عن رتبة الصحيح، وباقي رجاله ثقات.» [ترقيم الرساله 1728] [ترقيم الشركة 1716]
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
(1) عبارة "قد علَّقوا" سقطت من (ص) و (ع).
Technical note: The phrase "qad 'allaqu" (they had hung) is missing from manuscripts (S) and ('A).

(2) في النسخ الخطية: ظفرى، والمثبت من "سنن البيهقي" 5/ 126 حيث رواه عن المصنِّف بإسناده هذا، وهو الصواب، وهو الموافق لما في مصادر التخريج عدا ابن خزيمة.
Technical note: In the manuscripts this word is "zafra", whereas the correct word is "dhifra", as in "Sunan al-Bayhaqi" (5/126), where he narrated it from the author (al-Hakim) with this same chain; all the other sources except Ibn Khuzaymah also support this.

(3) في النسخ الخطية: "لا يمس الأرض حاركها" ولا يستقيم المعنى، والمثبت من رواية ¤ ¤ البيهقي التي رواها عن المصنف، وهو الموافق لسائر مصادر التخريج.
Technical note: The manuscripts read "la yamassu al-arda harikuha" (its withers did not touch the ground), which does not give a sound meaning; the correct wording follows the narration of al-Bayhaqi, which he took from the author, and it agrees with all the other sources.

(1) إسناده حسن، كثير بن شنظير فيه كلام يحطه عن رتبة الصحيح، وباقي رجاله ثقات.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan". There is criticism of Kathir bin Shinzir that lowers him from the rank of "sahih", while all the remaining narrators are thiqah (trustworthy).
عطاء: هو ابن أبي رباح.
Technical note: 'Ata' is Ibn Abi Rabah.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (4/2193) narrated it with the chain of Yunus bin Muhammad from Hammad bin Zayd. In it, "ru'iya" (was seen) is in the passive form, and this is correct, because Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this incident from Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him), as is clear in the narration of Qays bin Sa'd from 'Ata' (Musnad Ahmad 36/21756).
قوله: "الإيضاع": حمل البعير ونحوه على الإسراع في السير عند الإفاضة.
Note / Clarification: "Al-ida'" means urging a camel and the like to go fast when departing from 'Arafat (the ifadah).
والقِعاب: جمع قَعْب، وهو القدح الضخم الغليظ من الخشب.
Note / Clarification: "Al-qi'ab" is the plural of 'qa'b', meaning a large, wide bowl made of wood.
تقعقعوا أي: ضرب بعضهم بعضًا، فكان منها صوت وصخب ينفر منه الناس.
Note / Clarification: "Taqa'qa'u" means knocking into one another, so that such noise and clamour arises that people take fright.
ذفرى ناقته: أصل أذنها.
Note / Clarification: "Dhifra naqatihi" refers to the root (back part) of the she-camel's ear.
والحارك: أعلى الكاهل.
Note / Clarification: "Al-harik" refers to the upper part of the camel's withers.
ولا يعارض إسراعه ﷺ في وادي محسِّر، فقد كان يسرع فيه، أما الإيضاع الذي فعلته الأعراب ولم يكن من فعله ﷺ، إنما هو عند الإفاضة من عرفات، انظر توجيه ذلك في "زاد المعاد" 2/ 309.
General principle: This (moving slowly) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) does not contradict his moving fast in the valley of Muhassir, for there he (peace and blessings be upon him) did move fast; whereas the "ida'" (hurrying) that he restrained the bedouins from was something done when departing from 'Arafat.
