It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Modesty and reticence (caution in speech) are two branches of faith, and obscenity and (needless) eloquence are two branches of hypocrisy."
This hadith is sahih on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it, although they used all of its narrators as evidence.

Grading: This hadith is sahih, except for the mention of "al-'iyy and al-bayan". Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain — even though its narrators are among the men of the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) — is "da'if" (weak) because it is "munqati'" (broken). Hassan bin 'Atiyyah did not hear from Abu Umamah, as al-Hafiz al-Mizzi stated with certainty in "al-Tuhfah" 4/ 162 and "al-Tahdhib" 3/ 159. And Abu Zur'ah al-'Iraqi said in "Tuhfat al-Tahsil": "Ibn Hibban mentioned him in the generation of the followers of the Successors (6/ 223), which indicates that, in his view, Hassan's hearing from any Companion is not established." Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (2027) narrated it via Ahmad bin Mani', from Yazid bin Harun, with this same chain, Grading: and he declared it "hasan". Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it at 36/ (22312) via Husayn bin Muhammad and others, from Muhammad bin Mutarrif. Reference / Source: It will come later with the author (al-Hakim) at number (170), Details of the narration: and there the wording is "al-badha' wa al-jafa'" (obscenity and coarseness) instead of "al-bayan". (173). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This hadith has two supporting reports, which will come later with the author at numbers (172) and (173). Note / Clarification: Imam al-Tirmidhi said: "Al-'iyy" means speaking little; "al-badha'" means obscenity in speech; and "al-bayan" means speaking a lot, like those preachers who deliver sermons and extend their speech and show off eloquence in it, praising people in a way that does not please Allah.
