It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no one on the face of the earth who dies without associating anything with Allah, bearing witness that I am the Messenger of Allah, while his heart is fully certain of it, except that Allah Almighty will surely forgive him." (The narrator Hissan bin Kahil says:) I asked: Did you hear this yourself from Mu'adh? The people present rebuked me (for this question), but he said: Leave him, he has not said anything bad. Yes, I heard it from Mu'adh bin Jabal, and Mu'adh maintained that he heard it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
This is a sahih hadith which trustworthy narrators have narrated; however, both of them did not report it with these words. In my view (and Allah knows best), they left it because of Hissan bin Kahil (or Ibn Kahin), since only Humayd bin Hilal al-Adawi is known for narrating from him; however, Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned that Qurrah bin Khalid also narrated from him. Both of them (the two Shaykhs) took narrations from a number of trustworthy narrators who had only one student, so by their own principles recording a hadith like this one becomes binding on them. And Allah knows best.

Grading: This hadith is sahih. This chain has the possibility of being graded hasan. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Two narrators narrated from Hissan bin Kahil, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". Al-Dhahabi was lenient in "al-Kashif" and called him "thiqah", while Ibn al-Madini declared him majhul (unknown). But for its marfu' part there are other routes from Mu'adh bin Jabal which strengthen it and establish it as sahih, as will come. 36/ (22001). Reference / Source: This hadith is in "Musnad Ahmad" 36/ (22001). Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (10911) narrated it via 'Amr bin 'Ali, from Ibn Abi 'Adi. Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Majah (3796), al-Nasa'i (10909) and (10910), and Ibn Hibban (203), through two routes from Humayd bin Hilal. Reference / Source: It was narrated in similar form by al-Bukhari (128), Muslim (32), and al-Nasa'i (10907), by way of Anas, from Mu'adh bin Jabal. Reference / Source: And Imam Ahmad narrated it at 36/ (22060) by way of Jabir bin Abd Allah, who reports it from someone who was present with Mu'adh at the time of his death; then he mentioned the hadith.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-'Iraqi, in the biography of Hissan in "Dhayl Mizan al-I'tidal" (724), commenting on this statement of al-Hakim, said: "I did not find what he quoted from Ibn Abi Hatim, either in 'al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil' or in 'al-'Ilal'. Yes, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in 'al-Thiqat' and said that al-Aswad bin Abd al-Rahman al-'Adawi also narrated from him." We (the editors) say: But in the sources this narration of al-Aswad occurs via "al-Hasan bin Dinar", and al-Hasan bin Dinar (who is al-Hasan bin Wasil Abu Sa'id al-Tamimi) is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned) and "muttaham" (accused), so his narration from him carries no weight.
