Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 15

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever goes to a fortune-teller or a soothsayer and believes what he says has disbelieved in the religion (Shari'ah) that was revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)."
This hadith is sahih on the condition of both of them through the narration of Ibn Sirin, but they did not record it. However, Imam Bukhari narrated, through Ishaq from Rawh from Awf from Khilas and Muhammad from Abu Hurayrah, the story of Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) in which his being free of a physical defect is mentioned.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih and muttasil (connected) through Muhammad (Ibn Sirin),
Technical note / Defect ('illah): but as for "Khilas", he did not hear from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in his "al-Sunan" 8/ 135 from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain. Al-Hafiz al-'Iraqi declared it sahih in his "Amali", and al-Dhahabi said in "Mukhtasar Sunan al-Bayhaqi": "Its chain is strong". Al-Munawi quoted these statements from both of them in "Fayd al-Qadir".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it at 15/ (9536) via Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan, from 'Awf, from Khilas, from Abu Hurayrah.
Reference / Source: It was also narrated by Abu Dawud (3904), Ibn Majah (639), al-Tirmidhi (135), and al-Nasa'i (8967) and (8968), by way of Hammad bin Salamah, from Hakim al-Athram, from Abu Tamimah al-Hujaymi, from Abu Hurayrah, as "marfu'". The text is: "Whoever goes to a menstruating woman (for intercourse), or goes to a woman in her anus, or goes to a soothsayer and believes what he says…" (the hadith).
Grading: This is a chain whose narrators are unobjectionable, except that it is "munqati'" (broken).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Because it is not known that Abu Tamimah al-Hujaymi heard from Abu Hurayrah.
Note / Clarification: Imam al-Tirmidhi said after the hadith: According to the people of knowledge, the meaning of this hadith is taken as "taghliz" (severity and warning). It is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: "Whoever goes to a menstruating woman (for intercourse), let him give a dinar in charity." If going to a menstruating woman were "kufr", expiation would not have been commanded for it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad (i.e. Imam al-Bukhari, may Allah have mercy on him) declared this hadith weak on account of its chain.
Note / Clarification: Caution: the route of al-Harith bin Abi Usamah in his "al-Musnad" 2/ 187/ 1, and by his route Abu Bakr bin Khallad recorded it in "al-Fawa'id" 1/ 221/ 1 (as in al-Albani's "Irwa' al-Ghalil" 7/ 69) — in his version "Muhammad bin Sirin" is not present; rather, this narration is from Khilas alone, narrating from Abu Hurayrah.

Reference / Source: It is in the "Sahih" (of al-Bukhari) at number (3404).
Details of the narration: Ishaq here refers to "Ibn Ibrahim al-Hanzali", who is known as Ibn Rahawayh.
Note / Clarification: "Al-udrah" means: swelling of the testicle (hernia).
