Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 14

Iyas bin Salamah narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Salamah bin al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with him)) that he was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), leading a pregnant mare of his, with a filly of hers following behind her. The man asked: Who are you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am a Prophet." He asked: What is a Prophet? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Messenger of Allah." He asked: When will the Hour be established? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(It is of) the unseen, and none knows the unseen except Allah." He said: Show me your sword. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him his sword; the man brandished it (in the air) and then returned it to him (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Know that you would not have been able to do what you intended (that is, to kill)." The narrator says: The man had already said beforehand: I will go to him and ask him about these matters.
This hadith is sahih, but they did not narrate it, although both of them are agreed on using Iyas bin Salamah from his father as evidence, and Imam Muslim, using this very chain as evidence, narrated several hadiths from Ahmad bin Yusuf.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (S) the word is "fasalhu" (written with the hamzah softened), and in (B) "fas'alhu", which is a command to ask. Perhaps what we have established in the text is correct, as in the narration of al-Tabarani, which also has this addition: "Then I take my sword and kill him". This is the remainder of the statement of the man about whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Details of the narration: Muhammad bin Ishaq here refers to "al-Saghani", and Salamah (the Companion who narrates this hadith) refers to "Ibn al-Akwa' al-Aslami".
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir" (6245) by way of Abu Hudhayfah Musa bin Mas'ud al-Nahdi, from 'Ikrimah bin 'Ammar.
Note / Clarification: In the words of the hadith "bi-farasin lahu 'aquq", "al-'aquq" among livestock means "pregnant". A mare is 'aquq when her belly splits open (i.e. expands) and widens for the foal. Its root is "al-'aqq", which means digging a deep hole in the ground.
