It is narrated from Najiyah al-Khuza'i (may Allah be pleased with him), the keeper of the sacrificial camels of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), that he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! What should I do with those sacrificial animals that collapse (on the way), injured or exhausted? He (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded me: "Whichever she-camel collapses from exhaustion, slaughter it, then dip its sandal (na'l) in its blood and mark it (on one side of its hump, so that it is known to be a sacrificial animal), and then leave it for the people so that they may eat it."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
31/ (18943). Grading: Its isnad is sahih. Criticism of a narrator: Muhammad bin Abd al-Wahhab is Ibn Habib al-Farra'. It is in "Musnad Ahmad" 31/ (18943). Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (3106) narrated it via various routes from Waki' with this same chain. Variation in the chain: Ahmad (18944) and Ibn Hibban (4023) narrated it via Abu Mu'awiyah, al-Tirmidhi (910) via 'Abdah bin Sulayman, and Abu Dawud (1762) via Sufyan al-Thawri (all from Hisham bin 'Urwah). In al-Thawri's narration the Companion is named "Najiyah al-Aslami", and other narrators also corroborated this. The scholars differ over whether these are one person or two, but this does not affect the authenticity of the hadith, since a difference over the identity of the Companion is not harmful. Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan sahih". General principle: The scholars act upon this: if a voluntary sacrificial animal (hady al-tatawwu') collapses from exhaustion or is injured on the way, its owner and his companions should not eat any of it, but should leave it to the people so that they may eat it, and the sacrifice will count for him. This is the view of Imam al-Shafi'i, Ahmad and Ishaq. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic the narration of Qabisah Abu Dhu'ayb (may Allah be pleased with him) is in Musnad Ahmad 29/ (17974), where the other narrations are also mentioned.
