Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1649

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the coming and going (of people) has died down, go out less, for Allah Almighty spreads out (over the earth) at night whatever He wills of His creation."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih, and the isnad is hasan on account of Muhammad bin Ishaq. Ibn Ishaq explicitly stated that he heard it, in Ibn Hibban (5518).
Criticism of a narrator: Ishaq bin Ibrahim is Ibn Rahawayh, and Jarir is Ibn Abd al-Hamid.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (22/ 14283) and Ibn Hibban narrated it within a long hadith, in which it says: "When you hear the barking of dogs and the braying of donkeys at night, seek refuge with Allah, for they see what you do not see. Go out less once people have settled down (to sleep), for Allah spreads out during His night whatever of His creatures He wills. Shut the doors and mention the name of Allah over them, for Satan does not open a door that has been shut with the name of Allah mentioned over it. Tie up the waterskins, cover the jars and turn the vessels upside down."
Reference / Source: This hadith will also come in the author's (al-Hakim's) collection via Yazid bin Harun at no. (7955), and in abridged form at (7956).
Grading: The chain of al-Layth bin Sa'd from Shurahbil bin Sa'd is weak due to the weakness of Shurahbil. It was narrated by Ahmad and Abu Dawud (5104).
Grading: The chain of Sa'id bin Abi Hilal from Sa'id bin Ziyad is weak because Sa'id bin Ziyad is majhul (unknown). It was narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i.
Grading: This narration of 'Umar bin Ali bin al-Husayn is weak due to i'dal (two or more consecutive narrators missing from the chain).
Grading: The chain of Ahmad's (14870) narration from Talq bin Habib, which mentions guarding against the onset of the night's first darkness ("fawrat al-'isha'"), contains an unnamed (mubham) narrator.
Reference / Source: Abu al-Zubayr, 'Ata' and 'Amr bin Dinar narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) as marfu' that children and livestock should be kept from going out at sunset until part of the night has passed. It was narrated by Ahmad, al-Bukhari (3280), Muslim (2012 and elsewhere) and Ibn Hibban.
