Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), in explaining the saying of Allah Almighty: "And upon those who are able to do it (but do not fast), a ransom: the feeding of one poor person" [Surah al-Baqarah: 184], said: whoever willingly adds to the good, "And whoever does good voluntarily", feeds one more poor person, "it is better for him." He said that this verse is not abrogated; rather, it applies to the elderly man who is unable to fast: he was commanded to feed (as a ransom) when he knows that he is unable to fast.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih; its narrators are thiqah except the author's shaykh 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Hasan, who is da'if, but he is corroborated. Criticism of a narrator: Ibrahim bin al-Husayn is known as Ibn Dizil, and Warqa' bin 'Amr al-Yashkuri is among its narrators. Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (2638) narrated it through the chain of Yazid bin Harun from Warqa' from 'Amr bin Dinar; Ibn Abi Najih is not mentioned in it. Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari (4505) narrated from 'Ata' from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he recited the verse: "And upon those for whom it is a heavy burden and who cannot bear it, a ransom: the feeding of a poor person." Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This verse is not abrogated; rather, it concerns the old man and the old woman who are unable to fast, so they feed a poor person in place of each day. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2318) likewise narrated it through the chain of Sa'id bin Jubayr from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him).
