Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1621

حدَّثَناه أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا محمد بن سِنان القَزَّاز، حدثنا أبو علي الحنفي، حدثنا عبد الله بن بُدَيل عن عمرو بن دينار، عن ابن عمر: أنَّ عمرَ نَذَرَ في الجاهلية أن يَعتكِفَ يومًا، فسأل النبيَّ ﷺ، فقال النبيُّ ﷺ: "اعتَكِفْ، وصُمْ يومًا" (1). الحديث الثاني:
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had vowed in the Days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) to observe i'tikaf for one day. He then asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Complete your i'tikaf, and fast that day as well."

(1) حديث صحيح، دون قوله: "صم يومًا"، وهذا إسناد ضعيف لضعف عبد الله بن بديل - وهو ابن ورقاء الخزاعي - فقد ضعفه الدارقطني وغيره، وقد خالف هنا الثقات من أصحاب عمرو بن دينار الذين رووه عنه بذكر الاعتكاف فقط دون الصيام، لذلك قال أبو بكر النيسابوري - فيما نقله عنه الدارقطني بإثر الحديث (2361) -: هذا حديث منكر.
Grading: The hadith is sahih except for the words "Fast one day", but this chain is da'if because of the weakness of 'Abd Allah bin Budayl.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here 'Abd Allah bin Budayl contradicted the thiqah narrators, who mentioned only i'tikaf without fasting. Abu Bakr al-Naysaburi declared it munkar.
أبو علي الحنفي: هو عبيد الله بن عبد المجيد الحنفي.
Criticism of a narrator: Abu 'Ali al-Hanafi refers to 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Abd al-Majid al-Hanafi.
وأخرجه أبو داود السجستاني (2474) من طريق أبي داود الطيالسي، والنسائي (3341) من طريق عمرو بن محمد العنقزي، كلاهما عن عبد الله بن بديل بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2474) narrated it from Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, and al-Nasa'i (3341) through the route of al-'Anqazi, both from 'Abd Allah bin Budayl.
وأخرج أحمد 1/ (255) و 8/ (4577)، والبخاري (2032) و (2042) و (2043)، ومسلم (1656)، وأبو داود (3325)، وابن ماجه (1772) و (2129)، والترمذي (1539)، والنسائي (4744) و (4745)، وابن حبان (4379 - 4381) من طريق نافع عن ابن عمر: أنَّ عمر سأل النبي ﷺ قال: كنت نذرتُ في الجاهلية أن أعتكف ليلة في المسجد الحرام، قال: "فأوفِ بنذرك".
Reference / Source: Ahmad 1/ (255), al-Bukhari (2032 and others), Muslim (1656) and the four Sunan narrated through the chain of Nafi' from Ibn 'Umar that 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "In the Jahiliyyah I vowed to observe i'tikaf for one night in al-Masjid al-Haram." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then fulfil your vow."
