Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1587

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Many a fasting person gains nothing from his fast except hunger, and many a person who stands in prayer at night gains nothing from his standing except wakefulness (and its fatigue)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is jayyid (good).
Criticism of a narrator: Although 'Amr bin Abi 'Amr (the freed slave of al-Muttalib) is a narrator of the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim), there is some criticism of him which brings him slightly below the level of sahih; all the other narrators are thiqah.

Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (1690) and al-Nasa'i (3237) narrated it through the route of 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak; both of these (Abu Khalid al-Ahmar and Ibn al-Mubarak) relate it through the chain of Usamah bin Zayd al-Laythi from Sa'id al-Maqburi.
Grading: Al-Nasa'i (3238, 3319) narrated it through the chain of Ibn al-Mubarak from Usamah as the own statement of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) (mawquf).
Reference / Source: In al-Bukhari (1903) and other books it is narrated as marfu' through the chain of Ibn Abi Dhi'b from Sa'id al-Maqburi from his father, that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever does not give up false speech, acting upon it and ignorant conduct, Allah has no need of his giving up his food and drink."
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (3480) narrated it as marfu' through the chain of Ibn al-Mubarak from Ibn Abi Dhi'b.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): On this, see "'Ilal al-Daraqutni" (2073).
Variation in the chain: Al-Nasa'i (3232) narrated it as marfu' through the chain of Yunus bin Yahya from Ibn Abi Dhi'b from al-Zuhri from 'Abd Allah bin Tha'labah, and declared it "munkar", because no one other than Ibn Abi Dhi'b narrated it from al-Zuhri.
