It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fasting is not merely refraining from eating and drinking; rather, true fasting is refraining from idle talk and indecent speech. So if someone abuses you or behaves ignorantly towards you, then say (in reply): I am fasting, I am fasting."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

5/ 136. Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this had been distorted (by error) into "al-Hanzali"; the correction was made from "Ithaf al-Maharah" (5/ 136).
Grading: This hadith is sahih except for the words: "Fasting is not (merely abstaining) from eating and drinking." Technical note / Defect ('illah): In mentioning these words, al-Harith bin 'Abd al-Rahman (Ibn Abi Dhubab) is alone in narrating from his paternal uncle, and nothing is known about the condition of his uncle ('Abd Allah bin al-Mughirah). Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (3479) narrated it through the chain of Hatim bin Isma'il from al-Harith bin 'Abd al-Rahman, with this same chain. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This hadith, with this meaning, is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) through various routes, such as those of 'Abd al-Rahman al-A'raj, Abu Salih Dhakwan, Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, 'Ajlan (the freed slave of al-Musham'il), Abu Hazim and others. The wording of al-Bukhari is: "When it is the day of fasting for one of you, let him not speak obscenely nor raise his voice; if anyone insults him or tries to fight him, let him say: I am fasting." Reference / Source: Ahmad, al-Bukhari (1903), Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa'i narrated it as marfu' through the route of Sa'id al-Maqburi from Abu Hurayrah: "Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it, Allah has no need of his giving up his food and drink."
