Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when eighteen nights of the month of Ramadan had passed. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached al-Baqi', he saw a man having cupping (hijamah) done, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who performs cupping and the one who has it done have both broken their fast."
Imam al-Awza'i transmitted this chain with great excellence and precision and made clear that each narrator heard it from his teacher; likewise a group of trustworthy narrators corroborated him. Therefore this hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih, but according to the Imams it has been established as "abrogated (mansukh)". Variation in the chain: There is some inconsistency in its chain, but according to Imam al-Bukhari the two hadiths of Thawban and Shaddad bin Aws are the most sound in this chapter. Criticism of a narrator: Al-Awza'i ('Abd al-Rahman bin 'Amr), Abu Qilabah ('Abd Allah bin Zayd al-Jarmi), Abu Asma' ('Amr bin Marthad) and Thawban (the freed slave of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) are among its narrators. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (37/ 22410) narrated it from Abu al-Mughirah, and Ibn Hibban (3532) via the route of al-Walid bin Muslim (both from al-Awza'i), with this same chain. Details of the narration: It is also reported next via two other routes from Yahya bin Abi Kathir. Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (3128) narrated it via the chain of Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani from Abu Qilabah. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2371) and al-Nasa'i narrated it via the routes of Makhul al-Shami and Rashid bin Dawud, through the chain of Abu Asma'. Reference / Source: Ahmad (22431) and Abu Dawud narrated it via the route of Makhul, that an elder of the tribe told him this on the authority of Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Nasa'i (3120) narrated it via the chain of Sa'id bin 'Abd al-'Aziz from Makhul, but Makhul's hearing from Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) is not established. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad and al-Nasa'i narrated it via various routes reported from Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him). 14/ (8768). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Narrations on this topic are also reported from several other Companions, which we have mentioned in Musnad Ahmad (14/ 8768) under the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). General principle: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar quotes in "al-Fath" (6/ 401) the statement of Ibn Hazm that the hadith "The one who cups and the one who is cupped have broken their fast" is undoubtedly sahih, but it is established from the narration of Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) later granted a concession for it. Important point: Since a concession always comes after the binding ruling, it is established that the ruling that cupping breaks the fast has been abrogated.
