Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1557

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said that he had seen the new moon, that is, the moon of Ramadan. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you bear witness that there is no god but Allah?" He said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah?" He said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Bilal! Announce to the people that they should fast tomorrow."
Imam Sufyan al-Thawri and Hammad bin Salamah have corroborated it from Simak bin Harb.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: It is hasan on the strength of its supporting reports (hasan li-ghayrihi), although there is inconsistency (idtirab) in some of the narrations of Simak from 'Ikrimah, and there is disagreement over whether it is connected or mursal (most preferred the mursal),
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: however, a supporting report (shahid) for it is the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that passed two numbers earlier.
Criticism of a narrator: Za'idah refers to Ibn Qudamah.
Reference / Source: This hadith has already passed (at number 1116) via the route of Za'idah bin Qudamah, and its takhrij is there.
