Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1553

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has made the new moons a means of fixing times. So when you see it (the moon of Ramadan), fast; and when you see it (the moon of Shawwal), break the fast (celebrate Eid). Then if the sky is overcast for you, estimate for it (that is, complete thirty days); and know that a month is not more than thirty days."
The chain of this hadith is sahih, but the two Shaykhs did not record it; and Abd al-Aziz bin Abi Rawwad is trustworthy, devout, diligent in worship and of noble lineage.
