Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1554

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to keep track of the dates of the moon of Sha'ban more carefully than he did for any other month. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would fast upon sighting the moon of Ramadan; but if the sky was overcast, he would complete a count of thirty days and then fast.
This hadith is sahih on the condition of the two Shaykhs. Imam Ibn Wahb and others have narrated it from Mu'awiyah bin Salih, but the two Shaykhs did not include it in their books.

Grading: The hadith is sahih, and this chain is hasan on account of 'Abd Allah bin Salih (the scribe of al-Layth bin Sa'd), and he is corroborated.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (42/ 25161), Abu Dawud (2325) and Ibn Hibban (3444) narrated it via the chain of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi from Mu'awiyah bin Salih, and both of these chains are sahih.
Important point: The words of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) "yatahaffaz" (he would keep track): this means that he (peace and blessings be upon him) took special care to keep track of the days of Sha'ban for the sake of safeguarding the fasts of Ramadan.
