Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1551

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said, in this very Baqi': I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "The one who eats and gives thanks is (in the sight of Allah) like the fasting person who is patient."
This hadith is sahih on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: An error occurred here in his nisbah; all the sources write him as "al-Aslami" or "al-Sulami".

Grading: This chain is hasan on account of Ma'n bin Muhammad al-Ghifari.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (1764) narrated it via two routes from Ma'n bin Muhammad al-Ghifari.
Details of the narration: It will come later in the hadiths reported from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) via the routes of Ma'n al-Ghifari and Salman al-Agharr (numbers 7377 and 7378).
Important point: "Al-ta'im al-shakir" (the grateful eater): al-Sindi says this means that Allah requires of His servant obedience to Him and servitude, not mere hunger. So a person who eats and gives thanks to Allah is like a person who fasts and is patient, since both of them are engaged in obedience to Allah.

Note / Clarification: Imam al-Dhahabi objected to the author (al-Hakim) in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak", saying: "This hadith is in the Sahihayn (al-Bukhari and Muslim), so there was no need to include it (in al-Mustadrak)." We say: rather, the correct view in this matter is what al-Hakim said, that the two Shaykhs did not narrate it; Imam al-Bukhari only mentioned it "in suspended form (mu'allaqan)" in the Book of Foods, under the chapter "The grateful eater is like the patient faster" (number 5460). Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar says in "al-Fath" (16/ 499): "This is one of the suspended hadiths that do not occur in this book (al-Bukhari) with a connected chain."
