It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that we were present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when suddenly a man came with something like an egg of gold and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I found this in a mine; please accept it, it is charity, and I have no wealth other than it." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him. Then he came from his (peace and blessings be upon him) right side and said the same thing, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away again. Then he came from the left side, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face away again. Then he came from behind, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took that (gold) from him and tossed it at him (in such a way) that had it struck him, it would have hurt him or wounded him. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One of you brings all his wealth and says: This is charity, then he sits (having become needy himself) and stretches out his hand to people. The best charity is that which is given out of sufficiency, after one's own needs have been met."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Grading: Apart from the author's (al-Hakim's) shaykh (Abd al-Rahman bin al-Hasan), all the narrators are thiqah; there is some weakness in his shaykh, but he has been corroborated, Defect / Technical note: also, Muhammad bin Ishaq is a mudallis and here he has narrated with "'an". Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (1673) narrated it through Musa bin Isma'il with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (22/ 14531) and Ibn Hibban (3345) narrated through Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best charity is that given out of surplus wealth; begin with those you are responsible for; and the upper hand is better than the lower hand." Grading: Its chain is sahih. Reference / Source: Ahmad (22/ 14273), Muslim (997/ 41), Abu Dawud (3957) and al-Nasa'i (2338, 4987, 4988, 6203 and 6204) narrated through Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, that a man of Banu Udhrah made a slave of his "mudabbar" (to be freed after his death). When this reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he asked: "Do you have any other property besides him?" He said: "No." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will buy him from me?" So Nu'aym bin Abdullah al-Adawi bought him for eight hundred dirhams. He (peace and blessings be upon him) gave that sum to the man and said: "Begin with yourself and spend on yourself; then if anything remains, on your family; then if anything remains, on your relatives; then if anything remains, like this and like this (i.e. on other causes)." These are the words of Imam Muslim.
