Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1513

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding Sadaqat al-Fitr: "On behalf of every young and old, free and slave, (let there be given) one sa' of wheat or one sa' of dates."
Thus this narration has been reported from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as marfu' (as a saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him), whereas other narrators have reported it as mawquf (as Sayyiduna Ali's own statement).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Without the words "a sa' of wheat", this narration is sahih as mawquf.
Defect / Technical note: Its chain is weak because of the weakness of al-Harith al-A'war al-Hamdani. There is disagreement about whether it is marfu' or mawquf, and al-Daraqutni and al-Bayhaqi declared its "mawquf" version correct. Through various routes, half a sa' of wheat is what is established from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as mawquf.
Criticism of a narrator: Abu Bakr bin Ayyash is thiqah, but his memory deteriorated in old age.
Variation in the chain: Al-Daraqutni (2113) mentioned it as marfu', but the words "half a sa' of wheat" occur in it. Al-Daraqutni said in "al-Ilal" (343) that an error occurred in making it marfu'. According to al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, this error came from Abu Bakr bin Ayyash.
Grading: Al-Daraqutni narrated it at the next number (2114) as mawquf and said that this is the correct version (al-sawab).
Reference / Source: Al-Daraqutni (2068) narrated it as marfu' through Ali bin al-Husayn, from his father, from Ali, in which one sa' of dates, barley or aqit is mentioned.
Criticism of a narrator: Ibn Daqiq al-Id says that in its chain there are some people whose condition needs to be known.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (4/ 161) narrated it as marfu' through Ja'far al-Sadiq, from al-Baqir, from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), in which wheat is not mentioned.
Defect / Technical note: According to al-Bayhaqi, this narration is munqati'.
Note / Clarification: After this, a mawquf narration will come through another route from Abu Ishaq.
