Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1512

When Sadaqat al-Fitr was mentioned in the presence of Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "I will give (as Sadaqat al-Fitr) only what I used to give in the blessed time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): one sa' of dates, or one sa' of wheat, or one sa' of barley, or one sa' of dried cheese (aqit)." A man from the gathering said to him: "Or two mudd (of wheat)?" He replied: "No, that is the valuation set by Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him); I will neither accept it nor act upon it."
The chains that I have presented earlier regarding the sa' of wheat are all sahih, and the most famous of them is the hadith of Abu Ma'shar, which he narrated from Nafi' from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), for which we obtained a high chain; but I did not record it here because it was not on the condition of this book (al-Mustadrak).

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts we have, this name was written wrongly; Ibn Abd al-Hadi pointed out that the correct name is "Abdullah bin Abdullah bin Uthman bin Hakim bin Hizam".

Grading: Without the mention of a sa' of wheat, the hadith is sahih; mentioning it is an error (wahm) or a mistake.
Criticism of a narrator: This chain is hasan; a number of narrators narrated from Abdullah bin Abdullah bin Uthman, and Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i recorded this hadith of his. Muhammad bin Ishaq has explicitly stated that he heard it directly (in Ibn Hibban), so the suspicion of tadlis is removed.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (3306) narrated it through Ya'qub al-Dawraqi, from Isma'il Ibn Ulayyah, exactly like this narration of al-Hakim, in which a sa' of wheat is mentioned.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (1617) narrated it through Musaddad, from Ibn Ulayyah, without the mention of wheat, and he stated explicitly that the mention of wheat is "not preserved".
Defect / Technical note: Ibn Khuzaymah (2419) said that the mention of wheat in the hadith of Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) is an error, because if he had mentioned at the very beginning that they used to give a sa' of wheat, there would be no sense in a man later asking about "two mudds of wheat" (half a sa').
Important point: Our strong presumption is that this error came from Muhammad bin Ishaq, which is also the position of Ibn al-Turkumani, that Ibn Ishaq is alone in this addition and the huffaz are wary of what he narrates alone.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i (2309) narrated it through Yazid bin Abi Habib, from Abdullah bin Abdullah bin Uthman, that Iyad bin Abdullah told him that Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) we used to give one sa' of dates, or one sa' of barley, or one sa' of aqit (dried cheese); we did not give anything else."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Without the mention of wheat (hintah), Imam Ahmad (17/ 11182 and 18/ 11932, 11933), Muslim (985/ 18), Abu Dawud (1616), Ibn Majah (1829), al-Nasa'i (2304, 2308) and Ibn Hibban (3305) narrated it similarly through Dawud bin Qays. Also Ahmad (18/ 11698), al-Bukhari (1505, 1506, 1508, 1510), Muslim (985/ 17, 19, 20), al-Tirmidhi (673) and al-Nasa'i (2302, 2303) narrated it through the various routes of Zayd bin Aslam, Isma'il bin Umayyah and al-Harith bin Abd al-Rahman from Iyad bin Abdullah. The story of Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) is mentioned in some narrations and not in others.
Variation in the chain: Muhammad bin Ajlan also narrated it from Iyad bin Abdullah, but there is disagreement from him about it. Hatim bin Isma'il in Muslim (985/ 21), and Yahya al-Qattan in Abu Dawud (1618) and Ibn Hibban (3307), narrated it from Ibn Ajlan like the other narrators, without the mention of wheat.
Variation in the chain: Sufyan bin Uyaynah narrated it from Ibn Ajlan (Abu Dawud 1618 and al-Nasa'i 2305), but Sufyan had a doubt in it and said the words "daqiq" (flour) or "sult". Al-Nasa'i says: I do not know anyone other than Ibn Uyaynah who mentioned flour in this hadith.
Important point: Abu Dawud reported the statement of Hamid bin Yahya that when Sufyan said "flour", people objected to it, upon which he dropped it. Abu Dawud says that this addition is an error of Ibn Uyaynah.

Important point: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar quotes in "al-Fath" (5/ 227 - 228) the statement of Ibn al-Mundhir: We do not know of any established report from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about wheat (qamh) that can be relied upon; at that time there was very little wheat in Madinah.
General principle: When wheat became plentiful in the time of the Companions, they considered that half a sa' of wheat takes the place of one sa' of barley. Then he (Ibn al-Mundhir) reported with sahih chains from Uthman, Ali, Abu Hurayrah, Jabir, Ibn Abbas, Ibn al-Zubayr and Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them) that in sadaqat al-fitr there is half a sa' of wheat.

Grading: Abu Ma'shar (Najih bin Abd al-Rahman al-Sindi) is weak. Al-Hakim narrated it in "Ma'rifat Ulum al-Hadith" (p. 131) through Nasr bin Hammad, from Abu Ma'shar, in which wheat is mentioned. Al-Hakim says that a group of imams narrated it from Nafi', but none mentioned wheat, except for what Sa'id al-Jumahi narrated alone.
Criticism of a narrator: Nasr bin Hammad al-Warraq is weak; Abu Zur'ah said his hadith should not be written, and al-Dhahabi declared him accused (muttaham).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This narration is also reported from Abu Ma'shar through two other routes in which a sa' of wheat is not mentioned. Ibn Zanjawayh (2362) narrated it through Abu Nu'aym (who is thiqah thabt), from Abu Ma'shar, in which it says that people made two mudds of wheat (half a sa') the equivalent of one sa' of barley.
Reference / Source: Similarly, al-Bayhaqi (4/ 175) narrated it through Abu al-Rabi' al-Zahrani (who is also thiqah), from Abu Ma'shar, and in it too a sa' of wheat is not mentioned.
