Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1511

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made Sadaqat al-Fitr obligatory, as one sa' of dates or one sa' of wheat, on every free person, slave, male and female among the Muslims.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Criticism of a narrator: This is Ahmad bin Ali al-Khazzaz, as mentioned in al-Bayhaqi (4/ 166).

Criticism of a narrator: In the manuscripts this name is "al-Turjuman"; the correct one is Isma'il bin Ibrahim bin Bassam al-Baghdadi (Abu Ibrahim al-Turjumani), who came from Khurasan.

Grading: Without the words "a sa' of wheat", the hadith is sahih.
Criticism of a narrator: About Isma'il al-Turjumani, Ibn Ma'in and al-Nasa'i said "there is no harm in him". Sa'id bin Abd al-Rahman al-Jumahi is a disputed narrator.
Defect / Technical note: The thiqah narrator Sulayman bin Dawud al-Hashimi narrated it from Sa'id al-Jumahi but did not mention wheat in it, and in the narrations of the two Sahihs too the words wheat and "from among the Muslims" are not present.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (4/ 166) narrated it via al-Hakim and said that the mention of wheat (al-burr) in it is "not preserved" (i.e. it is a mistake).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (9/ 5339 and 10/ 6214) narrated through Sulayman bin Dawud, from Sa'id al-Jumahi, the words "a sa' of barley" instead of wheat.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (9/ 5174), al-Bukhari (1512), Muslim (984), Abu Dawud (1613) and al-Nasa'i (2296) narrated it through six different routes from Ubaydullah bin Umar, from Nafi'; all of them mentioned "barley" instead of wheat, and none of them mentioned the addition "from among the Muslims".
Variation in the chain: Abu Dawud says that Sa'id al-Jumahi said the words "from among the Muslims" in his narration from Ubaydullah, but these words are not in the well-known narration from Ubaydullah.
