It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sadaqat al-Fitr is obligatory on every Muslim, whether free or slave, male or female, and it is one sa' of dates or one sa' of barley."
This hadith is sahih on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it. I have mentioned it alongside the hadith of Qays bin Sa'd because that (first hadith) apparently indicates that it is recommended, whereas this hadith makes clear that it is obligatory.

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The same attribution occurs in the manuscripts and in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (4/ 162), but it is apparent that this is an old corruption, because in other sources this attribution is "al-Mahri" (with a fathah on the mim and a sukun on the ha). Important point: According to al-Sam'ani and Ibn al-Athir, this is an attribution to "Mahrah bin Haydan" (of the tribe of Quda'ah), to whom Abu al-Hajjaj Rishdin bin Sa'd al-Mahri al-Misri is attributed.
Grading: This hadith is sahih, but this particular chain is weak because of the weakness of Ahmad bin Muhammad bin al-Hajjaj bin Rishdin, Corroborating chains and supporting reports: however, there is corroboration (mutaba'ah) for it. Al-Layth is Ibn Sa'd. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (4/ 162) narrated it via Abu Abdullah al-Hakim with this same chain. Reference / Source: Al-Daraqutni (2074) narrated it through Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Farisi, from Ibn Rishdin. Reference / Source: Al-Daraqutni (2074) narrated it through Muhammad bin Amr bin Khalid (Abu Ulathah), and al-Bayhaqi (4/ 162) through Ubayd bin Abd al-Wahid, from Yahya bin Bukayr. Criticism of a narrator: There is no harm in Abu Ulathah and Ubayd (la ba'sa bihima). Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (1507), Muslim (984), Ibn Majah (1825), al-Nasa'i (11658) and Ibn Hibban (3300) narrated through various routes from al-Layth bin Sa'd that Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded zakat al-fitr as one sa' of dates or one sa' of barley; then people fixed two mudds (half a sa') of wheat as its equivalent." Kathir bin Farqad is not mentioned in these narrations. (1511). Note / Clarification: See the previous hadith (no. 1506) and the coming hadith (no. 1511).
