Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1482

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man from Banu Amir passed by him, and it was said: "This is one of the wealthiest of people." Abu Hurayrah called him and asked him about that, and he said: "Yes, I have a hundred red camels, a hundred tawny camels, and such-and-such a number of sheep and goats." Abu Hurayrah said: "Beware of the hooves of camels, and beware of the hooves of sheep; for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'There is no man who has camels and does not pay their due in their hardship and their ease (najdah and risl)' - the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Their najdah and risl means their difficulty and their ease' - 'except that he will be laid out for them on a wide, level plain, and they will come to him as swift, as lively and as fat, or as large, as they ever were' - Shu'bah was in doubt - 'and they will trample him with their hooves and butt him with their horns. Whenever the last of them passes over him, the first of them is brought back to him, on a Day whose length is fifty thousand years, until judgement is passed between the people and he sees his path. And there is no servant who has cattle and does not pay their due in their hardship and their ease' - the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Their najdah and risl means their difficulty and their ease' - 'except that he will be laid out for them on a wide, level plain, and they will come as swift, as lively, as fat and as large as they ever were, and they will trample him with their hooves and butt him with their horns. Whenever the first of them passes over him, the last of them is brought back to him, on a Day whose length is fifty thousand years, until judgement is passed between the people and he sees his path.'" Al-Abbas said to him: "And what is the due of camels, O Abu Hurayrah?" He said: "That you give the finest of them (in zakah), lend out the abundant milker, lend out its back for riding, lend the stud for mating, and give milk to drink."
This hadith has a sahih chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it; Muslim only recorded some of these wordings from the hadith of Suhayl from his father from Abu Hurayrah. It is said that Abu Umar al-Ghudani is Yahya bin Ubayd al-Bahrani; if that is so, Muslim used him as evidence. I do not know anyone who narrated it from Shu'bah other than Yazid bin Harun, and we did not write it with a high chain except from Abu al-Abbas al-Mahbubi.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Variation in the chain: In the printed editions it has become "ka'adad", but according to the books of takhrij and lexicon the correct word is "aghadhdha" (with ghayn and dhal).
Important point: "Aghadhdha" means: to move very fast or be brisk.

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts it is "wa a'zamuhu", and the words "Shu'bah was in doubt" are only in manuscripts (S) and (B).

Grading: This hadith is sahih, and this chain is possibly hasan. Abu Umar al-Ghudani is a Tabi'i; only Qatadah narrates from him. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" and no one criticised him. All the remaining narrators are thiqah.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (16/ 10351) and Abu Dawud (1660) narrated it through Yazid bin Harun. Abu Dawud did not mention its wording but referred to the narration of Abu Salih from Abu Hurayrah.

Important point: "Asarrihi": that is, the camels will be in their best condition in fatness and flesh. In some copies it is "ashirihi", which means very brisk and lively.
Note / Clarification: "Fa-yura sabiluhu": there is a technical discussion between Qadi Iyad, Imam al-Nawawi and al-Iraqi about its vowelling: whether the ya takes a dammah or a fathah, and whether the lam takes a dammah or a fathah.
