Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah, but there is criticism of Hammad bin Zayd's narration from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari.
Criticism of a narrator: According to Ibn Abi Hatim, Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi said: I have not seen anyone with a better memory than Hammad bin Zayd, but he had a booklet (juz') of Yahya bin Sa'id in which he used to mix things up.
Variation in the chain: Here he has contradicted the thiqah narrators who narrate it mursal up to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and in their narrations the man who was sent was "Abu Hathmah", not his son "Sahl".
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (4/ 124) narrated it via Abu Abdullah al-Hakim. Al-Khatib recorded it in "Tarikh Baghdad" (4/ 237) through Khalaf bin Hisham, from Hammad bin Zayd.
Reference / Source: Abu Ubayd narrated it in "al-Amwal" (1449) (and through him Ibn Hazm in "al-Muhalla" (5/ 159)) from Hushaym and Yazid bin Harun, Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (4/ 283) from Anas bin Iyad and Yazid bin Harun, Ibn Abi Shaybah (3/ 194) from Abu Khalid al-Ahmar, and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Kubra" (4/ 124) and "al-Ma'rifah" (8188) via Sulayman bin Bilal (all five narrate it through Yahya bin Sa'id, from Bushayr bin Yasar), that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to send "Abu Hathmah" as an estimator.
Important point: And Allah knows best, this is the correct view (that it was Abu Hathmah), because at the time of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) death Sahl was only eight years old, whereas the person whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to send was his father "Abu Hathmah". See the biography of Sahl in "Tahdhib al-Kamal".
Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq (7221) narrated through Sufyan al-Thawri, from Yahya bin Sa'id, from Bushayr bin Yasar, that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say to the estimators: "Leave for them the amount that falls (and is lost) and the amount they eat themselves." The name of the person sent is not mentioned in it.
Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq (7222) also narrated something similar through Ma'mar, from Yahya bin Sa'id, but Bushayr bin Yasar is not mentioned in it.
Variation in the chain: Al-Tahawi (2/ 40) narrated it through Abu Bakr bin Ayyash, in which he mentioned Sa'id bin al-Musayyib and named Sahl bin Abi Hathmah; but Abu Bakr bin Ayyash makes mistakes and he is alone in this.
Reference / Source: Abu Ubayd (1450) narrated it through Yazid bin Harun, from Yahya bin Sa'id, that Marwan sent Sahl to estimate, and he estimated the property of Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) at seven hundred wasqs.
Criticism of a narrator: The narrator named "Abu Maymun" in this chain is majhul (unknown).
