Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 144

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! I heard so-and-so mentioning you and praising you; he claims that you gave him two dinars." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "But so-and-so does not say such a thing, although he has received from me between ten and a hundred (dinars)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One of you leaves me with what he asked for (the thing he requested), tucked under his arm, yet it is nothing but fire for him." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! Then why do you give to them?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What am I to do? They ask me, and Allah does not approve that I should be stingy."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this context.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih, although there is disagreement in its chain on Imam al-A'mash (Sulayman bin Mihran).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Bakr bin Ayyash narrated it with the chain Abu Salih from Abu Sa'id, Abu Mu'awiyah with Abu Salih from Abu Hurayrah, and Hibban bin Ali with Abu Salih from Jabir.
Important point: Disagreement over identifying the name of the Companion makes no difference to the soundness of the hadith.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid narrated it through the chain al-A'mash from Atiyyah al-Awfi from Abu Sa'id, but Atiyyah al-Awfi is a weak narrator.
Note / Clarification: Imam al-Hakim himself had acknowledged about Abdullah bin Bishr that he narrates munkar reports from al-A'mash, yet here, through oversight, he gave him a place in al-Mustadrak.
Important point: In summary, what is correct is the version of the first three narrators, that this is al-A'mash's narration from Abu Salih (Dhakwan al-Samman), even though there is disagreement over the name of the Companion. Imam al-Daraqutni refrained from preferring any one of these differing narrations.
Reference / Source: The narration of Abu Bakr bin Ayyash was transmitted by Imam Ahmad and Ibn Hibban through various routes with this same chain.

Reference / Source: This probably refers to the narration of Sahih Muslim (1056) in which Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed some wealth, and I said: others were more deserving of it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They have left me the choice between their asking me with rudeness or regarding me as a miser, and I am not a miser".
