Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1323

Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever washes a deceased person and conceals (his faults), Allah Almighty will forgive him forty times; whoever shrouds a deceased person, Allah Almighty will clothe him in garments of the fine and thick silk of Paradise; and whoever digs a grave for a deceased person and buries him in it, a reward will be kept flowing for him until the Day of Resurrection, as though he had given him a house to live in."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is hasan because of Shurahbil bin Sharik al-Ma'afiri. 'Ulayy bin Rabah explicitly stated that he heard this hadith from Abu Rafi' in sources other than the author's.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Adab" (276), in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (8827) and in "Ma'rifat al-Sunan wa al-Athar" (7353) from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (929), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (6782), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (3/295) and "al-Sunan al-Sughra" (1038), and Qiwam al-Sunnah al-Asbahani in "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib" (2280) and (2281) narrated it via routes from Abu 'Abd al-Rahman 'Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Muqri' with this same chain. In the printed edition of al-Tabarani it reads: "Whoever washes a dead person and conceals (what he sees), he is forgiven forty major sins", instead of "forty times". Shaykh Nasir al-Albani (may Allah have mercy on him) held in "al-Silsilah al-Da'ifah" (6781) that the word "major sins" is shadh, attributing the error to al-Tabarani's teacher Harun bin Malul al-Basri, since al-Tabarani narrated it from him from 'Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Muqri' with the wording "forty major sins", contradicting a group of trustworthy narrators who narrated it with the wording "forty times". We say: what undermines this is that Abu Nu'aym's narration in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" is via this same Harun bin Malul, and it has the wording "forty times", like the narration of all the other narrators from 'Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Muqri'; this removes the error and irregularity (shudhudh) that al-Albani (may Allah have mercy on him) attributed to him, and the word "major sins" is a distortion by some copyists of "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir", and Allah knows best. The hadith will come at number (1356).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is the narration of the Mother of the Believers 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) in Musnad Ahmad (41/24881), but its chain is weak.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is in Ibn Majah (1462), and its chain is very weak (wahi).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) is in al-Tabarani and al-Bayhaqi, and its chain is also weak.
(Clarification): "fa-ajannahu" means: he covered him, i.e. he shrouded and buried him.
