Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: (4) His words "from his father" the second time are from the margin of manuscript (Z), where they are marked as correct, so the hadith becomes connected as the narration of 'Abd Allah bin Abi Qatadah from his father Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him). It seems al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar relied on it and so placed the hadith in the musnad of Abu Qatadah in "Ithaf al-Maharah" (4054); however, this addition is not in the rest of our manuscripts. What supports its presence, as in (Z), is that al-Bayhaqi narrated it this way from the author in two places in "al-Sunan al-Kubra", as in the Hajar edition (6678) and (12739), relying on originals including an old one, the copy of al-Hafiz Ibn al-Salah; this addition dropped out of later copies of it, and likewise from the Indian edition (3/384 and 6/276). Al-Hafiz al-Zayla'i cited it in "Nasb al-Rayah" (2/252) from "Mustadrak al-Hakim" with mention of Abu Qatadah in it, which strengthens what appears in manuscript (Z).
Grading: (1) Its chain is hasan, in sha' Allah. A group narrated from Yahya bin 'Abd Allah bin Abi Qatadah, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat"; Nu'aym bin Hammad has some weakness, but he is corroborated. This chain is connected if Abu Qatadah in it is preserved; otherwise it is mursal, because 'Abd Allah bin Abi Qatadah did not witness this incident. However, he is a senior, trustworthy Tabi'i, and he narrates it from his own family, since al-Bara' bin Ma'rur (may Allah be pleased with him) was his maternal grandfather.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (3/384 and 6/276) narrated it from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Mundhir narrated something similar in "al-Awsat" (2904) via the route of Ibrahim bin Hamzah from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Muhammad al-Darawardi from Yahya bin 'Abd Allah bin Abi Qatadah from his father from his father; so Ibrahim bin Hamzah (al-Zubayri), who is saduq with no harm in him, narrated it as connected. It does not contain the story of his being turned towards the qiblah at the time of his death.
Variation in the chain: Ibn al-Mundhir repeated it in abridged form (7013), also via the route of Ibrahim bin Hamzah from al-Darawardi, except that he said: from Yahya bin 'Abd Allah bin Abi Qatadah, from his mother, from his father.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated in "al-Tabaqat" (3/572) from Muhammad bin 'Umar (al-Waqidi) from Yahya bin 'Abd Allah bin Abi Qatadah from his mother from his father, who said: The first person over whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed when he came to Madinah was al-Bara' bin Ma'rur. He went with his Companions, lined them up over him and said: "O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him and be pleased with him, and You have done so."
Details of the narration: In it, with this chain, from Abu Qatadah, who said: The death of al-Bara' bin Ma'rur was in Safar, a month before the arrival of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Repetition: It will come in al-Mustadrak (4898), but there it reads: from his father from his grandfather, instead of: from his mother from his father.
Technical note: We say: if what appears in Ibn Sa'd and Ibn al-Mundhir, namely his narrating it from his mother from his father, is preserved, that does not preclude Yahya having heard it from both his mother and his father, narrating it once from her and once from him, and Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Al-Harith bin Abi Usamah narrated in his "Musnad" (273 - Bughyat al-Bahith) from Ya'qub bin Muhammad from 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Darawardi from Yahya bin 'Abd Allah bin Abi Qatadah from his father that the Prophet prayed over the grave of al-Bara' bin Ma'rur and said four takbirs over him.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Something similar was narrated through another, mursal route: from the hadith of Hammad bin Salamah from Abu Muhammad bin Ma'bad bin Abi Qatadah that al-Bara' bin Ma'rur (and he mentioned it). Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (3/571), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (1185) and (3279), and al-Bayhaqi (4/49); in Ibn Sa'd and al-Bayhaqi it says that al-Bara' told them: turn me towards the qiblah in my grave. In al-Tabarani it is abridged to the story of bequeathing a third only, and its chain there reads: from Abu Muhammad bin Ma'bad from Abu Qatadah, which is an error; the correct version is what is in Ibn Sa'd and al-Bayhaqi. This Abu Muhammad is unknown (majhul); no one other than Hammad bin Salamah narrated from him. In "Sunan al-Bayhaqi" it says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived a year after the death of al-Bara', but al-Bayhaqi said after it: this is how I found it in my book, and the correct version is: after a month, and Allah knows best.
Variation in the chain: Salih bin Kaysan narrated from al-Zuhri from 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah bin Ka'b bin Malik from Ka'b, who said: al-Bara' bin Ma'rur was the first to face the qiblah in life and at the time of his death, before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) faced it; when death came to him, he ordered his family to turn him towards al-Masjid al-Haram. Al-Tahawi narrated it in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (5538), and Ibn Mandah in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (p. 288). This chain is sahih if Ka'b in it is preserved.
Variation in the chain: For Salih was contradicted in narrating it as connected by Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah (the nephew of al-Zuhri) and Ma'mar in Ibn Sa'd (3/571), and by Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah in al-Bayhaqi (3/384); they narrated it from 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah bin Ka'b bin Malik as mursal, without Ka'b. The wording of the narration of al-Zuhri's nephew is similar to that of Salih, and Ma'mar said in it: that he be turned (towards it) when placed in his grave. Al-Bayhaqi abridged it and said: it is a good (jayyid) mursal.
Reference / Source: Ma'mar narrated in his "Jami'" (20705) from al-Zuhri, who said: al-Bara' bin Ma'rur was the first to face the Ka'bah alive and dead. He used to pray towards the Ka'bah while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Makkah prayed towards Bayt al-Maqdis. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed of this, and he sent word to him to pray towards Bayt al-Maqdis, and he obeyed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When death came to him, he said to his family: turn me towards the Ka'bah. 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated it in his "Musannaf" (6064) from Ma'mar from al-Zuhri in abridged form.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On the topic of turning the dying person towards the qiblah, there is what Ibn Abi al-Dunya narrated in "al-Muhtadarin" (309) with a sahih chain from Rib'i bin Hirash: that his sister, the wife of Hudhayfah, said: On the night Hudhayfah died, he kept asking us which part of the night it was, and we would tell him, until it was the pre-dawn time; then he said: sit me up, so we sat him up; he said: turn me (towards the qiblah), so we turned him; he said: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from a morning in the Fire and from an evening in it. This is mawquf, an act of Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him), and the turning meant here is turning towards the qiblah.
