Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1280

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever visits a sick person in the evening, seventy thousand angels go out with him, seeking forgiveness for him until the morning, and he will have a garden of picked fruits (kharif) in Paradise. And whoever comes to visit in the morning, seventy thousand angels go out with him, seeking forgiveness for him until the evening, and he will have a garden of picked fruits (kharif) in Paradise."
This chain is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it, because a group of narrators reported it as mawquf (a statement of the Companion) from al-Hakam bin Utaybah and Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir, from Ibn Abi Layla, from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), which is Shu'bah's narration from the two of them; but I hold to my principle that an addition reported by a trustworthy narrator is to be accepted.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) The hadith is "sahih"; there is a difference over whether it is marfu' or mawquf. Al-Daraqutni judged the mawquf version to be stronger, whereas al-Hakim and Abu Dawud held it to be marfu' (a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)).
Technical note: Abu Mu'awiyah refers to Muhammad al-Darir, al-A'mash refers to Sulayman, and al-Hakam refers to Ibn 'Utaybah.
Repetition: It will come again at number (1309) with a story, and at number (1310) via the route of Shu'bah.
(Clarification): "al-kharif" refers to fresh fruit picked from the tree.
