It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: "Who among people are tried most severely?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The prophets, then those who are best (in rank) after them, then those who are best after them. When a man is firm in his religion, he is tried according to the measure of his religion: the one whose religion is solid, his trial is severe, and the one whose religion is weak, his trial is (correspondingly) lighter."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim).

(1155). Grading: This hadith is sahih and all its narrators are thiqah. Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement in this chain on al-Ala' bin al-Musayyab: Khalid bin Abdullah al-Wasiti and Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Muharibi (al-Bazzar: 1155) narrated it in this way (as connected). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid (Ibn Hibban: 2920) and Muhammad bin Fudayl (Mu'jam Ibn al-Muqri': 650) contradicted the above narrators by narrating it with the chain "al-Ala' bin al-Musayyab from his father from Sa'd". Important point: The narration of al-Musayyab (bin Rafi') from Sa'd is "mursal". Note / Clarification: See the discussion that follows.
