Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 120

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was suffering from a severe fever, and there was a sheet over him (peace and blessings be upon him). He placed his hand on the sheet and felt the heat even from above the sheet. So Abu Sa'id said: "O Messenger of Allah! How severe your fever is!" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Such is our (the prophets') case: trials are made severe for us and our reward is also doubled." Then he asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Who among people are tried most severely?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The prophets." He asked: "Then who?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The scholars." He asked: "Then who?" He said: "Then the righteous. One of them would be tried with poverty to such an extent that he had nothing to wear except a single cloak, and another would be tried with lice (in great number) until they killed him; and one of them would be happier with his trial than any of you is with a gift (from Allah)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, because he used Hisham bin Sa'd as evidence. Moreover, it has many supporting narrations, and the hadith of Asim bin Bahdalah from Mus'ab bin Sa'd from his father has many routes that are discussed in the study circles of knowledge, and al-Ala' bin al-Musayyab corroborated Asim bin Bahdalah (in narrating it from Mus'ab bin Sa'd).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Allah willing, this chain is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement about Hisham bin Sa'd, but Imam Abu Dawud al-Sijistani regards him as the most reliable of people (athbat al-nas) in the narrations of Zayd bin Aslam. Although this chain outwardly appears "mursal", since Ata' bin Yasar was not present at the event, in reality it is Ata's narration from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), because it was Abu Sa'id who told him the story, as is clear from other narrations (for example, number 8045).
Reference / Source: Imam Ibn Majah narrated it (4024) through the chain of Ibn Abi Fudayk from Hisham bin Sa'd.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ma'mar bin Rashid contradicted Hisham (Musnad Ahmad 18/11893): narrating it from Zayd bin Aslam, he left the narrator from Abu Sa'id unnamed ("from a man").
Important point: The author will later mention a supporting report (shahid) for part of it from the hadith of Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It has another supporting report in the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated by Imam al-Bukhari (5648) and Imam Muslim (2571).
