Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 111

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that we prayed the funeral prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) over a man of the Ansar; then he mentioned the long hadith about the conditions of the grave.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), because both of them used al-Minhal bin Amr and Zadhan Abu Umar al-Kindi as evidence. This hadith contains many benefits for Ahl al-Sunnah and a refutation of the innovators; however, the two of them (Imam Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it at such length.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (30/18536) via Mu'awiyah bin Amr with this same chain.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Only Imam al-Bukhari (of the two) narrated from the narrator al-Minhal (bin Amr), while only Imam Muslim narrated from Zadhan (Abu Umar).

Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (1369, 4699) and Muslim (2871) narrated only that portion of this hadith which is reported through the route of Sa'd bin Ubaydah from al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him): "When the believer is made to sit in his grave, he is approached, and he then bears witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah; that is what is meant by the words of Allah: 'Allah keeps firm those who believe with the firm word' (Ibrahim: 27)".
