Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1071

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon when Sayyiduna al-Hasan and Sayyiduna al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) came. They were both wearing red shirts and were stumbling and falling as they walked (because of their young age). So he (peace and blessings be upon him) came down from the pulpit, picked them both up and seated them in front of him. Then he said: "Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth: 'Your wealth and your children are only a trial' [Surah al-Taghabun: 15]. I saw these two children of mine and I could not bear it until I came down and picked them up." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) resumed his sermon.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. It is a foundation (evidence) for the permissibility of interrupting the sermon and coming down from the pulpit when there is a need.

Grading: (1) The chain is strong because of al-Husayn bin Waqid (al-Marwazi); he is a saduq (truthful) narrator.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (3774), Ibn Hibban (6039) and al-Nasa'i narrated it through various routes from al-Husayn bin Waqid. Al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan gharib".
Repetition: It will come later through the route of Zayd bin al-Hubab at no. (7583), where the details will be given.
