It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) settled upon the pulpit on Friday and said to the people: "Sit down." Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) heard this while he was at the door of the mosque, so he sat down right there. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Ibn Mas'ud! Come here (closer)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: (1) In the manuscripts it had been changed in two places to "Ibn Mas'adah"; the correction is taken from al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" and the other sources.

Grading: (2) Its narrators are thiqah. Although Ibn Jurayj does not state explicitly that he heard it from Ata', his narration from him is taken as connected. Hisham bin Ammar, in his old age, began to accept talqin (taking words prompted by others).
Variation in the chain: There is a difference over whether it is mawsul (connected) or mursal; according to Abu Dawud and al-Daraqutni, its being "mursal" is more correct.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It was narrated from Ibn Jurayj, but his students differed over it:
Reference / Source: Al-Walid bin Muslim narrated it through the chain of Ibn Jurayj from Ata' from Ibn Abbas, making it "from the Musnad of Ibn Abbas" (connected), as it is with al-Hakim and al-Bayhaqi.
Reference / Source: Ibn Khuzaymah (1780) narrated it via Hisham bin Ammar and said: if al-Walid has correctly preserved it as connected, well and good; otherwise the other students of Ibn Jurayj narrated it as "mursal", from Ata' from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Variation in the chain: Makhlad bin Yazid, Mu'adh bin Mu'adh and Abu Zayd al-Nahwi narrated it through the chain of Ibn Jurayj from Ata' from Jabir bin Abdullah, making it "from the Musnad of Jabir".
Reference / Source: The narration of Makhlad bin Yazid will come with al-Hakim (1068) and al-Bayhaqi (3/206) via Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Abdi.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (1091) and Ibn al-Jawzi narrated the same through the chain of Ya'qub bin Ka'b. Abu Dawud said: it is known only as mursal, and Makhlad is a shaykh.
Reference / Source: Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis and Ibn Asakir narrated it via Ishaq bin Zurayq. Al-Bayhaqi also reported it through the route of Mu'adh bin Mu'adh.
Reference / Source: The narration of Abu Zayd al-Nahwi is mentioned in al-Daraqutni's "al-Ilal", but we did not find it in the original sources.
Grading: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, in "Ithaf al-Maharah" (3/293), preferred that it is "the hadith of Ibn Abbas".
Variation in the chain: Isma'il bin Ayyash narrated it through the chain of Ibn Jurayj from Ata' from Ibn Mas'ud, making it "from the Musnad of Ibn Mas'ud" (Ilal al-Daraqutni).
Variation in the chain: Abd al-Razzaq (5368) and Rawh bin Ubadah narrated it from Ibn Jurayj from Ata' as "mursal".
Grading: Amr bin Dinar also narrated it from Ata' as "mursal" (al-Bayhaqi 3/218); according to Imam al-Daraqutni too, its being "mursal" is more likely correct.
