Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1061

It is narrated from Abdullah bin al-Harith (the paternal cousin of Muhammad bin Sirin) that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to his mu'adhdhin on a rainy day: When you have said 'Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah' (I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah), do not say 'Hayya ala al-salah' (Come to the prayer); rather say: 'Sallu fi buyutikum' - "Pray in your homes." The narrator said: It was as if the people found this strange, so he said: This was done by one who was better than me (that is, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him). Indeed, the Friday (prayer) is obligatory, but I disliked to bring you out (of your homes) and have you walk in mud and water.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: (1) In the manuscripts "Ibn Amm" had become "an"; the correct reading is "Ibn Amm" (cousin). He is Abdullah bin al-Harith al-Ansari al-Basri, a close relative (brother-in-law) of Muhammad bin Sirin.

Grading: (2) Its chain is sahih. Isma'il is Ibn Ulayyah, and Abd al-Hamid, the companion of al-Ziyadi, is Ibn Dinar.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (901) and Abu Dawud (1066) narrated it through the chain of Musaddad bin Musarhad with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Muslim (699) (26) narrated it through the chain of Ali bin Hujr from Isma'il Ibn Ulayyah.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (616, 668) and Muslim narrated it through the routes of Hammad bin Zayd and Shu'bah. In Hammad's narration Abd al-Hamid is also corroborated by Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani and Asim al-Ahwal.
Reference / Source: Muslim and Ibn Majah (939) narrated it through Asim al-Ahwal alone, and through the route of Wuhayb bin Khalid from Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani. Wuhayb said that Ayyub did not hear it from Abdullah bin al-Harith.
Technical note: Al-Hafiz Rashid al-Din al-Attar said: Imam Muslim mentioned this statement of Wuhayb in order to make clear the variation in Ayyub's narration, although Hammad bin Zayd is more reliable than others in the narrations of Ayyub. In any case, this narration is established as connected through other sahih chains.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (938) narrated through the chain of Abbad bin Mansur from Ata' from Ibn Abbas that on a rainy Friday he said: "Pray in your dwellings"; but there is weakness in its chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (4/2503) narrated something similar through the chain of Ibn Abi Adi from Ibn Awn from Muhammad bin Sirin from Ibn Abbas. Ibn Awn was unsure whether it is marfu', but the chain is sahih.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic the hadith of Abd al-Rahman bin Samurah will come later at no. (1096).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Ibn Umar concerning the congregational prayer is in Ahmad (8/447), al-Bukhari and Muslim.
(Note / Clarification): "Azmah" (azimah) means an obligatory, binding command; that is, had the mu'adhdhin said 'Hayya ala al-salah', it would have become binding on you to come to the mosque (despite the rain), and you would have suffered hardship.
