Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1033

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever combines two prayers without any excuse has come to one of the great doors of sins."
Hanash bin Qays al-Rahabi is trustworthy (thiqah); Imam Bukhari used Ikrimah as evidence; and this hadith is a foundation on the subject of forbidding the combining of prayers without an excuse; however, the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Grading

Grading: (2) This chain is "very weak".
Criticism of a narrator: There is agreement that Hanash (al-Husayn bin Qays) is weak. Al-Hakim's calling him thiqah is an oversight on his part, and al-Dhahabi also corrected him, saying that everyone declared him weak.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (188) narrated it through the chain of al-Mu'tamir bin Sulayman and declared it weak because of Hanash, and said that the practice of the people of knowledge is that two prayers are not combined except on a journey or at Arafah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is narrated from Umar as mawquf (his own saying) that combining two prayers without an excuse is among the "major sins". Abd al-Razzaq and al-Bayhaqi narrated it through two chains which strengthen one another.
