It is narrated from Qays bin Qahd (may Allah be pleased with him) that he came while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was leading the Fajr prayer, so he prayed with him. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the salam, he stood up and prayed the two (sunnah) rak'ahs of Fajr. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "What are these two rak'ahs?" He replied: I had not prayed them before Fajr. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent and did not say anything.
Qays bin Qahd al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) is a Companion, and the chain reaching him is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs. Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Taymi has also narrated it from Qays bin Qahd:

Grading: (1) Its chain is capable of being graded hasan. Sa'id bin Qays, the father of Yahya, is listed among the trustworthy by Ibn Hibban (4/281). Variation in the chain: According to the majority he is Qays bin Amr, while according to Mus'ab al-Zubayri he is Qays bin Qahd. Ibn Hibban, as Ibn Hajar noted, oddly reconciled the two by saying that "Qahd" was the nickname of his father Amr. Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (1563, 2471) narrated it through the routes of al-Rabi' bin Sulayman. Technical note: Ibn Khuzaymah (1116) narrated it through the chain of Asad bin Musa and considered it "gharib" (unusual). Ibn Mandah said that Asad is alone in narrating it as mawsul (connected to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him), whereas others narrated it as "mursal". (Musnad Ahmad 39/23760). Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq (4016) and Ahmad narrated it as mursal through the chain of Ibn Jurayj from Abd Rabbih from his grandfather, and its narrators are thiqah.
